![]() I like the idea of the shorter barrel with rifle sights and smooth barrel because I could keep it around for deer season as well. I don't plan on decking this thing out too much, just a shorter barrel and maybe some sling swivels. The question I have is, will all the 12 gauge barrels interchange without any issues? I am not an expert on the 870 by any means, I usually have Ithaca pumps but the price on this gun was too nice to pass up. I figure I can find a shorter 18.5 inch smooth barrel with a bead or a 20 inch barrel with rifle sights will do and I will sell the barrel on it online or something. It has a full choke vent rib barrel that's 28 inches long but after tax out the door it was $260. I spotted an older Model 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge that the serial number puts at around 1980-1981 in about 97-98% that takes 2 3/4 only (I never found a need for 3 inch slugs or buckshot). Now that you mention it, the R does seem to be spaced a bit farther from the other 2 leters, indicating that it was probably stamped at a different time than the first 2.
